There is a question that comes up in almost every project at some point:
Why don't we choose a catalogue luminaire?
It's a legitimate question. In many cases, the catalogue is actually the right answer. Excellent solutions exist, with proven performance, defined lead times, and a value for money ratio that is hard to beat.
But not every project fits within a standard solution.
When a tailor makes a bespoke suit, he doesn't charge only for the fabric and the hours of work. He charges for the experience of understanding how it should fit a specific person.
With lighting, something similar happens.
What you see in the price of a luminaire manufactured in our Barcelona workshop is the materials, the finishes, and the production time. What you don't see is all the preliminary work that allows the solution to be adapted to the real project.
These situations are common in any project. The difference is that when manufacturing is nearby, adjustments can be made during the process not once the luminaire is already installed.
The real advantage is not local manufacturing in itself. The advantage is having the capacity to adapt when the project requires it.
When the workshop is close by, we can work with real materials, visit the space, validate samples, and make corrections quickly. This is not craftsmanship understood as something romantic. It is about reducing uncertainties and solving problems before they reach the construction site.
In the end, the client doesn't simply receive a luminaire. They receive a solution that has already been tested, adjusted, and validated for the specific conditions of their project.
As with Wald's aircraft, no one sees all the calculations that made the result possible. They only see that it arrived at its destination.
