Three Lighting Trends We Observed at Light + Building 2026

Reflections from HER Lighting

Light + Building once again confirms its role as one of the key meeting points for understanding where lighting design is heading.

After several days exploring the fair, speaking with manufacturers and observing different design proposals, certain recurring ideas emerge that reflect how the way we conceive light within spaces is evolving.

Beyond technological innovation, many proposals point toward a broader vision of lighting: creating atmospheres, bringing identity to spaces and enhancing the user experience. As we explored in our article on how lighting shapes emotion in architecture, light has the ability to transform how we perceive and experience space.

Among the many ideas presented at the fair, these are three of the trends that appeared most frequently.

1. Sensuous Atmospheres: Light as a Generator of Atmosphere

One of the most visible trends is the search for more sensorial and immersive atmospheres. Many luminaires feature soft shapes, translucent materials and systems that diffuse light delicately. Lightweight textiles, translucent surfaces and organic diffusers create luminous volumes that bring calm and an almost ethereal quality to space.

A colour palette inspired by nature also emerges, with soft neutral tones that reinforce visual comfort and environmental quality.

These luminous volumes contribute to a more atmospheric and emotionally engaging environment, reinforcing how lighting can shape the way architecture is perceived and experienced a topic we explore further in our article how lighting shapes emotion in architecture,

2. Considered Concepts: Timeless Design and Formal Clarity

Another clear direction points toward a more thoughtful and enduring design approach. Rather than following fleeting trends, many manufacturers are focusing on luminaires with clean geometries, honest materials and a formal language designed to stand the test of time.

Metals, glass, stone and mineral surfaces are combined with precision to create objects where form, material and function integrate coherently.

This approach also reflects greater attention to durability, adaptability and sustainability  aspects that are becoming increasingly relevant in the development of new products.

3. Energetic Gatherings: Lighting as a Narrative Element

A third trend focuses on more expressive and narrative compositions.

In many spaces, lighting appears integrated with materials, furniture and colour, creating dynamic scenes that convey identity.

Luminaires are combined with textures, surfaces and decorative elements to build environments where light does not simply illuminate, but actively participates in the spatial experience.

Looking Ahead

These trends show how lighting continues to expand its role within spatial design.

Beyond efficiency or technology, there is a growing appreciation for light’s ability to create atmospheres, bring character and transform the experience of the built environment.

At HER Lighting, events like Light + Building allow us to observe the evolution of the industry, exchange knowledge with other professionals and continue exploring new ideas that inspire future projects.
